Event description

Join us for the next edition of the FOHLC Café, where we continue our journey around the world! This time we will hear from an expert from the Greek community in the U.K.: how can we reimagine heritage language education to incorporate the practice of home tutoring?

Grab a cup of coffee or tea and come chat about your experiences with other people involved in heritage language education. Everyone is welcome: teachers, community organizers, and anyone interested in multilingualism.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Program

This time, we are honored to welcome Antonia Gkioka, PhD researcher in Linguistics at the University of Westminster. Her doctoral research, entitled “Reimagining Greek heritage language education: home tutoring and sociocultural identity,” looks at the understudied teaching method of home tutoring in Greek-as-a-heritage-language within London’s Greek community. Alongside her research, Antonia teaches Greek as a heritage and a foreign language, working with children and adult learners.

How does home tutoring influence a child's identity development as a Greek speaker, and how do technological developments like AI influence this form of education? What role does a family language policy (FLP) have in opting for home tutoring? Join us for a fascinating discussion about these issues, which may be applicable to your own language community.
