This summer another mother tongue program joined the list of heritage language schools in Eindhoven: French for Francophone teenagers. We are pleased to have Alliance Française Eindhoven participating in the HLSE initiative. The course coordinator is Sophie Héry, who reports that this program for teenagers was founded already back in 1995, as a part of Alliance Française Eindhoven. Alliance Française is an independent, non-profit organization that was founded in 1883 in Paris to promote the French language and culture around the world. Today there are more than 800 Alliance Française locations in 132 countries, with more than 500,000 students worldwide. Each Alliance Française is an independent association, but each is bound by a common purpose to the global network Fondation Alliance Française. Alliance Française Eindhoven's French course for French-speaking teenagers is designed for students aged 12 to 16 who use the French language on a daily basis or who have a French background. These courses help the students improve their writing and reading skills through different fun activities. They are based on the French middle school level ("collège"). The lessons are held every two weeks on Friday from 16:00 to 17:30 in Eindhoven (with no lessons during holidays). Two sessions are offered per year: from September to January and from February to June. The cost is €10 per lesson. At the end of each session, a diploma of achievement is awarded that is recognized in France. Sophie has lived in Eindhoven for eight years, and has previously lived in Poland, Hungary, and Singapore. She also teaches French at the International School of Eindhoven for the IB Middle Years Program there.
