The year 2026 has been declared the International Year of Volunteers, recognizing volunteer work as a key force in society. For heritage language education, this recognition is especially meaningful: community-based language programs in the Netherlands are almost entirely volunteer-run.
Through our involvement in this national campaign, HLE Network is helping ensure that heritage language education is not forgotten in the conversation about volunteer work. This sector offers multilingual children a natural form of global citizenship education and introduces them to inspiring volunteer role models.
Opening event in Utrecht
HLE Network’s Managing Director attended the national opening of the International Volunteer Year in Utrecht in February together with the Romanian School of Eindhoven. The event, attended by Queen Máxima, brought together volunteer organizations from across the Netherlands. We thank VrijwilligerswerkNL for the invitation!
Volunteer stories from our network
VrijwilligerswerkNL featured three volunteer stories from the HLE Network. These stories highlight the dedication that makes heritage language education possible.
Opportunities for Heritage Language Programs
Heritage language programs are encouraged to participate in the campaign.
Nationale Vrijwilligersprijzen 2026
Volunteer-run organizations can apply by explaining how their work benefits society. Applications include a one-minute video.
Share your story
VrijwilligerswerkNL is collecting volunteer stories throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to make heritage language education more visible.
Training and Resources
The campaign also offers practical support for volunteer organizations, including sessions on volunteer recruitment, youth volunteers, insurance, and volunteer compensation.
