Event description

Join us for an evening of professional development and networking with others involved with mother tongue education!


The HLE Networking Night has become an annual tradition in Eindhoven/Brainport, started in 2019, to kick off the new school year by putting the spotlight on active language groups in the city. The event provides a welcoming space for professionals involved in heritage language education -- and local partners -- to come together and explore ideas for collaboration. Each year, the HLE Networking Night is listed as an event of the European Day of Languages, an international initiative that celebrates linguistic diversity.


Last year we introduced the opportunity for heritage language teachers, program managers, and others interested to attend free interactive professional development sessions. This year we will continue this offer, giving people more time for the sessions (1.5 hours). Dinner broodjes will be provided to the professional development attendees.

Who is welcome?

The program will be interesting for language educators, mainstream school teachers, librarians, government officials, local business representatives, academics, and language advocates are all welcome. The evening is about making connections. Anyone interested in showing appreciation for the important work of heritage language educators is welcome!

Program: Professional development (17:55 - 19:25)

Attendees can sign up for one of three of the professional development sessions. Professional development attendees should arrive at 17:00 to have enough time to register and eat a delicious dinner broodje before the start of the session. Each session has space for 25 people.

The new "Review Rubric": A simple yet powerful tool for strengthening your heritage language program

Workshop description

Heritage language (HL) programs often run on passion and dedication, but finding time for self-evaluation can be a challenge. In this workshop, we will discover the International Guidelines for Professional Practices for Community-Based Heritage Language Schools (2021), an internationally developed, user-friendly framework designed to support HL programs of all sizes. Alona Boitsova, founder of the Russian School of Eindhoven, will share insights from 25 years of professionalizing her language program — from creating necessary policies to ensuring staff is trained in emergency preparedness. Participants will then try out the new "Review Rubric" that accompanies the guidelines, which is a practical tool to help programs reflect on their strengths and areas for growth. The tool can be used by heritage language program managers and by heritage language teachers.


While some self-evaluation tools can be overwhelming, this rubric offers a structured way to simply prioritize what matters most. We hope that this session will inspire HL programs to take meaningful steps toward strengthening their organizations.


About the speaker

With over 20 years of experience across international education, corporate project management, and diversity and inclusion, Alona's aim is to bring people together across cultures and sectors. As Program Director of the Multicultural Foundation “Buratino,” she leads innovative educational initiatives for the international community. She believe in the power of community, culture, and curiosity creating programs that help young people thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. With a strong background in program management, policy advising, and intercultural communication, her foundation collaborates with schools, municipalities, and organizations to develop educational strategies that serve diverse communities. Their work combines structure with soul: grounded in strategy, driven by empathy, and shaped by lived experience. Alona believes education is not just a system - it’s a bridge to belonging.

Beschrijfing Rondetafel

Deze sessie wordt begeleid door Linde van den Bosch, directeur van Stichting NOB, de organisatie die voor Nederland en Vlaanderen scholen wereldwijd ondersteunt bij het verzorgen van kwalitatief goed Nederlandstalig onderwijs en onderwijs Nederlandse taal en cultuur (NTC). Zij wordt terzijde gestaan door Steven Vanhooren, teamleider bij de Taalunie, de Verdragsorganisatie die beleid ontwikkelt voor het Nederlands in Nederland, Vlaanderen en Suriname en die het Nederlands in de wereld ondersteunt.


Aan tafel verkennen we gedeelde uitdagingen en oplossingen op het gebied van moedertaalonderwijs, zowel binnen het taalgebied als daarbuiten. We leggen relaties met organisaties binnen het taalgebied die zich op verwante terreinen begeven en we zoeken naar concrete ideeën voor samenwerking tussen heritage language-docenten in Nederland (en Vlaanderen) en Nederlandse scholen in het buitenland. We bespreken manieren om elkaars werk te versterken, bijvoorbeeld via gedeelde materialen, trainingen of uitwisselingen. De resultaten van het gesprek delen we met onze organisaties; als basis om op voort te bouwen.


Meer over de spreker

Het professionele hart van Linde van den Bosch ligt bij onderwijs, in het bijzonder bij taalonderwijs in internationaal perspectief. Haar huidige functie als directeur-bestuurder bij Stichting Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland (NOB) getuigt hiervan. Daarvoor was zij onder andere inspecteur voor de Europese Scholen, algemeen secretaris bij de Taalunie en leidinggevende voor primair en voortgezet onderwijs bij het Cito.



Van Informeel naar Formeel: Brainstorm over een nieuw zij-instroomtraject

Bescrhrijving Brainstormsessie

In deze sessie verkennen we de mogelijkheden om mensen die actief zijn in het moedertaalonderwijs (“informeel onderwijs”) een pad te bieden richting formele lesbevoegdheid. In Australië (New South Wales) kunnen lesuren in het informeel onderwijs bijvoorbeeld meetellen als praktijkervaring binnen een certificeringstraject. Zou zoiets ook in onze context mogelijk zijn?


Vragen die we willen bespreken:

  • Wie is er op dit moment bezig met zij-instroomtrajecten voor mensen met een meertalige achtergrond? Hoe zien die bestaande projecten eruit?

  • Zou een lerarenopleiding of andere partner een pad kunnen ontwikkelen voor moedertaaldocenten, met ondersteuning van HLE Network? Hoe zou zo’n traject eruit kunnen zien?


De sessie wordt geleid door Saskia Heunks en Sjef Hendrikx. Saskia is programmaleider bij Trion Opleidingsschool en schoolopleider op het Stedelijk College Eindhoven. Ze speelt een actieve rol in regionale samenwerkingen rond meertaligheid en lerarenopleiding. Sjef is schoolopleider en docent aan de International School Eindhoven (ISE), waar hij onder andere de begeleiding van nieuwe docenten coördineert. Hij brengt waardevolle ervaring mee uit het internationale onderwijsveld. Bij de brainstorm zullen ook mensen aanwezig zijn die betrokken zijn bij bredere trajecten en projecten op het gebied van zij-instroom.

Plenary talk "Heritage language teaching in Switzerland"

Switzerland is very proud of its multilingual identity. Despite this identification, it remains difficult for organizations offering heritage language courses to receive support within the regular educational system. The situation varies greatly from canton to canton, as the federal system grants each canton considerable autonomy in how federal laws are implemented. Sabrina Marruncheddu will give an overview of the different solutions adopted across Switzerland, with particular attention to the situation in the canton of Zurich.


About the speaker

Sabrina Marruncheddu, M.A., is a lecturer at the Department for International Projects in Education (IPE) of the Zurich University of Teacher Education, Switzerland. The focus of her work is on multilingualism, heritage language teaching and life skills education. She studied English and Italian at Zurich University, where she also obtained the diploma in teaching at upper secondary level. After completing her studies, she taught at various grammar schools before joining the Zurich University of Teacher Education in 2003.


Sabrina managed the development of the website www.myheritagelanguage.com, where the materials for heritage language teaching published by the Zurich University of Teacher Education are made available to a wider public. In the past years, she has been working closely with different heritage language communities to facilitate their teachers’ access to in-service training in the canton of Zurich, but also in the French part of Switzerland.

Her project experience ranges from planning and conducting teacher training in Eastern Europe and the Balkans to participating in an EU-project on multilingualism in schools.
