This week we had the pleasure of visiting the SprachCafé Polnisch in Berlin, part of our European network. This Polish heritage language program has been active for 14 years, and we were eager to meet the founder and visit its activity center in the north of the city.
What stood out immediately was the space itself! The entrance opens onto sunny terrace with several weather-protected information boards. Inside, it is warm and welcoming, filled with supplies, books, artwork, leaflets, and announcements. The tidy rooms are multi-functional, with areas that can be used for meeting, teaching, working, and celebrating. We were truly impressed by this initiative, supported by 60 volunteers and reaching 300 students.
Last year, HLE Network shared a vision for Eindhoven: we envision a region where heritage language educators are well-supported, in part through access to shared space. We highlight the need for a professional space that the different language groups can share -- for preparing materials, holding meetings, displaying promotional flyers, and storing teaching supplies. A place to catch up and exchange ideas over a cup of coffee.
Seeing how successful SprachCafé Polnisch is in Berlin is so inspiring and encouraging! It confirms our vision. It shows what is possible when educators have a place to come together.
Many thanks to Agata and Joanna from SprachCafé Polnisch for the warm welcome!
