Workshops and storytelling for Portuguese-speaking children

March 1, 2023

Is there a program for children who speak Portuguese? This is a question that we hear often. We are happy that we can now direct Portuguese-speaking families to the "POLH Semente" workshops and book readings organized in Eindhoven and Veldhoven!

"POLH Semente" (Português como Língua de Herança Semente) has been active since 2020. The organizers run a Facebook and Instagram (@polh.semente) page with information about their events.

Commitment to HL development

The organizers are committed to helping families to maintain Portuguese as a Heritage Language, strengthening the bonds with the country of origin, providing contact with other children who speak the same language, and helping develop the child's identity.

Affiliation with umbrella organizations

The organizers of POLH Semente are part of the "Rede POLH Países Baixos" (Portuguese as a Heritage Language Network in the Netherlands) and are affiliated with the "ELO Europeu" (European Link of Educators of Portuguese as a Heritage Language).

Monthly workshops

POLH Semente holds monthly workshops in Portuguese, on different topics, aimed at children and teenagers who speak Portuguese or who are children of Portuguese speakers living in the Netherlands. Through literature, music and art, they provide children with experiences related to their language and culture -- in an engaging way!

POLH Semente offers 4 groups:

  • "Grupo Mirim A" (4 to 6 years old)

  • "Grupo Mirim B" (4 to 6 years old)

  • "Grupo Infantil" (7 to 10 years old)

  • "Grupo Juvenil" (11 to 14 years old)

Each workshop lasts two hours. Check the dates and times of the workshops on POLH Semente's Facebook and Instagram (@polh.semente).

Book readings at Veldhoven Library

In addition to these workshops, POLH Semente organizers read every second Wednesday of the month at 15:00 at the Veldhoven Library. After the reading, the children are invited to do an activity. Enrolment is free and must be done through this link. For this library activity, the organizers have the support of the Consulate General of Brazil in Amsterdam, through the Citizenship Council.

Newest HLE Network Affiliate

We want to congratulate the organizers of POLH Semente on the important work they do in helping Portuguese-speaking families in our region. It is impressive what they have achieved only having been active for three years -- and keeping teenagers engaged in mother tongue activities is not always easy. We are very happy that POLH Semente has decided to become an HLE Network Affiliate, now listed in our directory!
